The Visual Art of Smokey DeVille

Highly reclusive and delightfully eccentric, the art of Smokey DeVille, like his music, reveals a sardonic outlook on life, culture, sex, and death in 21st century America.  While it is difficult to believe that there is very little premeditation in his practice as an artist, he proclaims his work to be a "virtually automatic purging", painting as it comes, so to speak, and says he has no idea how a piece will end up when he begins. Whatever the creative process, the results ultimately come together to form paintings, sculpture and mixed media pieces with a brash clarity that evokes a reaction from their most tentative viewers.
